As I think I tried to convey, other than the flat out convenience of not having to shift, there's not a lot to recommend about the AT. It is OK for what it is. It does not out accelerate the manual, either from a dead stop or in highway acceleration (as you point out; it gets lousy gas mileage, it does not appear to have a better maintenance (change the fluid every 20,000 miles , really?)or breakdown record (notwithstanding the exceptions that have been voiced), nor is particularly well geared (how about some overdrive?).
I never really hated my AT, but I do love the manual. I truly enjoyed taking the AT to the raw metal recycler. I even tried to give it away on this forum to anyone who might want it for parts or rebuilding (it did not die a violent death), but there were no takers.
This is an endless discussion, I think the original question has been answered (several times over).
