OldSaab - Lancer - yes that was my original question. I have seen it posted here and elsewhere that higher octane does improve mileage - but the only way I can see this happening is under identical driving conditions where the higher stuff is simply more efficient when an APC device or similar is used. Even the hypermiling page I posted above suggests this is the case.
Otherwise I don't see how you can get better mileage with higher octane gas unless you somehow improve the abilty of the engine to take advantage of it (eg increase available power so that in any given throttle position the engine is more efficient).
so for those of us w/out apc using higher octane might be a waste unless we advanced the ignition as well - my 86 has no knock sensor.
There might other advantages though - eg fuel cleaners etc....
