North American Saabs have different emission controls (EGR in California, earlier phase-in of catalytic converters requiring unleaded fuel) and different fuel injection and engine specifications. Electronic fuel injection started in Sweden for 1984 but didn't make it to North America until 1985. The stolid 8 valve engine was discontinued in North America after model year 1988 but manufactured for other world markets through 1990. Different special editions appeared in other places, sometimes restrained to England/France, Australia, and Nordic areas. Japan requires different emissions levels and sensors. The two-door notchback 900 was only sold in the US as a 900S for 1985 and 1986. This same car was sold as a basic Saab 90 model in Australia and the UK through 1990. The five-door hatchback, discontinued in the US in 1981, ran in Sweden through 1989 at least. Some UK/Australian 900s had Lucas fuel injection components instead of Bosch bits.
