This could be a long post...
"Quad Headlights" were only on the Saab 99s, which were last imported to the USA in 1980. The US cars have always gotten their own headlamps, due to differing regulations concerning them. 900s got rectangular sealed-beam headlamps from the start through MY 1986. In 1987, we got a US-spec version (and much less effective, IMO) of the "conforming" H4 headlamps available in most other markets.
Engines were always somewhat different, mostly in the emissions areas. This wasn't much of an issue before 1972, but after that, the differences were pretty large. The last non-catalyst car Saab sold into the USA was a 1978 model 99. The last non-fuel injected car would have been 73 or 74, if I recall.
The 16v was available starting in 1985, not 1984, as in other markets. Also, in some markets (but not the USA), the 16v motors had Lucas injection in place of Bosch.
As the other poster said, we got the 2-door only for 1985 & 86. But the two-door 900 IS NOT THE SAME CAR as the Saab 90. Though it would be hard to see the difference for some, the Saab 90 is a Saab 99 from the A-pillar forward, with the shorter wheelbase, and carburetted motor.
Also, we only got the 5-door in 1979 & 80. Except for the two years of the 2-door, we only got the 3-door, 4-door and Convertible from 1981.
Trim levels were different. Typically on the 900 (from 1981), there was the base model (just "900"), the 900S, the 900 turbo, and the 900 turbo SPG (85-). Occasionally packages would be offered, such as the "EAG" which included leather seats (which became part of the trim level in later years). The "S" often included power options, and a sunroof, and in later years, leather. The "S" also became the lowest level in the final year or two.
The "SPG" basically included Leather and what the rest of the world called the "Aero" package of side skirts and three-spoke wheels. Different years included different equipment "upgrades" from the 900 turbo. Later years saw lowered springs on the SPG, higher power motors, etc. The SPG is roughly equivalent to a 900 turbo 16S on Europe.
There could be a whole article on just the trim stuff...
And, of course, there are differences in the "special editions" from market to market. I always wanted a "Ruby Edition" 900...
