I have an audio recording of the dying prepump noise from my (early, 8 valve) '88. It's down with the main pump, but don't let that scare you away. I did mine for the first time at 217k back in February '07 in about two hours. I didn't have any stumbling or other symptoms, but I suppose I'm lucky. Replace the pickup strainer while you're in there. I highly recommend the alignment diagrams from the Bentley or Saab Chapter 2 manual(s). You'll also need some small Torx bits to fit the screws that hold the prepump to the pickup assembly. I bought a flexible quarter-inch drive extension to get the clamp loosened up, but as it turns out I didn't need it. You will also need two new sealing rings (eE's "large" size in the fuel filter sense) and a small (6mm?) wrench to remove the electrical contacts. Of course, disconnect the battery and have an extinguisher ready. I recommend doing this outdoors. Even in the middle of February, I had the garage door open and had to take a few breaks from the fuel smell. A well-trained mechanic could probably do this in half an hour.
