and you put 5ish in just before and drove just a couple of miles? If this is true then it's leaning towards the fuel pump and not the pre-pump.

However, if it runs well with a fuel tank... that sounds like the pre-pump. This variant fuel pump has a plastic tank about the size of a 1lb coffee can that the pump sits inside, it also has a pre-pump attached to the side of the "can" with an inlet attachment (think of a vacuum cleaner attachment to get close to the floor - bottom of the tank in this case) and the pre-pump fills the can and the pump evacuates that. if the pre-pump stops working (and it almost always is the one that quits first) the main pump can only empty out the can and any fuel that leaks into the can from the main fuel tank. basically it's like pulling the straw on your soda up from the bottom of the cup, there's liquid there but you can get to it. Same deal. So, if you run the car until it starts acting like it is out of fuel, and you can't put 15 gallons of gas in it (tank holds a little more than 16) then pre-pump is suspect. you will usually put about 12 gallons from "out of fuel" symptoms and the car will run fine then, until another 12 gallons is gone. basically you are only using 3/4 of the tank.
