does it just quit sometimes, and inbetween quitting just run fine? can you reproduce the symptoms by doing certain things? can you sometimes hold good boost for a while, but not others?
if the symptoms are similar to shutting the key off, i would be looking at the hall sensor (small 3 pin plug on side of distributor). try wiggling plug while engine is idling.
that test is not conclusive, unfortunately. the hall sensor can be cracked, causing an intermittant fault that cannot be induced by hand.
does it always restart after dying? if not, pull the spark plug cover off, then when it doesn't start check for a spark (be VERY careful of the voltages produced).
i am very weary of mechanics (although i am one myself...), especially ones that like to 'diagnose' by replacement-gets real spendy, real fast...
