Battery may be shot Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 17:38:33 In Reply to: Electrical, Dave nMeszler, Fri, 27 Jun 2008 17:04:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Is this the same battery, or have you replaced it?
If it's the same battery that has gone flat a bunch of times, then the battery should be replaced. Car batteries aren't designed to be fully discharged. Every time it gets discharged, it loses life. Discharge it a few times, and it won't hold a charge. Yes, you can put a charge on it, but it has no capacity - it's more like a bunch of AA batteries.
You should also put a voltmeter on the battery when the engine is running to check the charging voltage. At idle, accessories off (fan, headlights off), you should see at least 13.0 volts, preferably more. If you only see 12.5 volts at idle, the alternator has a problem.
But I think the battery is shot. You can discharge a brand new battery a half dozen times and kill it in a few weeks, so it isn't about age, but about how it has spent it's life. If you spend a lot of it dead, you get used to it.
