I'm not sure what length extension you need. If the 5" isn't long enough to give you clearance, then you probably need a longer one. 24" would be way too long. I'm not sure they even make a 24" extension. The best thing to do would be to get a ratchet extension set. They usually come with three or four different lengths of extensions from 3" to 12". You can combine them in series to get different lengths.
The 24" pipe is just to make your ratchet handle longer. You slide it over the handle and now your ratchet handle goes from 8" to 24". That extra length gives you tremendous leverage. Much more than you could ever get with an 8" handle.
While your out at the tool store, get yourself a good sturdy universal joint. This piece also will help you get at bolts that are at funny angles. Be sure you get a sturdy one that will withstand the torque you'll be applying to it. If you get Craftsman, they'll replace it for free if you do break it.
