Hi Nanette, a couple of added things.
the "breaker bar" would be used instead of the ratchet, it does not ratchet, is usually longer than the ratchet, is available in different lengths (more torque with same force on longer handle). Usually the breaker bar handle is round vs ratchet handle oblong or retangular, the round handle often lends itself better to a pipe that slides over the handle for increased overall length (torque or force). Sometimes with inexpensive ratchet wrenches you can break the mechanism with too much force. Also, if you have a Torque wrench - never use a pipe on it to increase the force as you can change the calibration (make it read incorrectly).
Also, sometimes the fact that the ratchet wrench needs more room to work (the head is thicker than a breaker bar) means that you would use a breaker bar. a 24" breaker bar is about $25 at the usual suspects. the 18" bar is about $15. suggest you get the 24" bar, the addtional force you can generate with it is very useful.
I use an 18" 1/2 inch drive breaker bar with the handle from my floor jack as an extension to loosen and tighten the axle bolts, they are very high values.
