My baby doesn't like high elevations

My plan was to drive into the Sangre de Christo mountains of northern New Mexico for a solo backpack trip. 110 miles from home I'm at 6,000 ft elevation doing fine. 12 miles later I've climbed to 7,700 ft and am in a high valley. The baby acted sluggish then picked up but then the engine just went weak and stalled. Nothing obivous in the engine compartment. It then started like normal and I started to move. Then it shut off. After a few minutes of deliberations on the joys of being broken in the middle of beautiful but remote northern New Mexico, I tried it again. The car started fine although the check engine light stayed on and I took off trying to head back. On the hill out of the valley it went weak and collapsed again. Another rest, start, and it ran just long enough to peak the hill and head downhill. So I had an 11 mile coast with the engine off back to 6,000 ft where I'd be a little closer to a tow truck or mechanic. But there it started fine, ran fine, and I drove home (5,000 ft) like normal.
The electrical system is fine, the gas pump and fuel filter were replaced not long ago and work fine. So my theory is that a weak oxygen sensor or perhaps air mass meter is the culprit. Any other suggestions?
