For me, the very word "classic" sets the theme as far as these cars are concerned. I've always found it's not just those of us that own and love the C-900s that admire their stylish lines and spirited driveability. Have you ever just looked at the front of these cars? It's striking, especially when equipped with the air dam. I've had plenty of thumbs up for my 1987 900T vert, and now my 1993 CommEd coupe (#286), despite both needing some TLC.
Performance and aesthetic upgrades, whether factory or aftermarket, add much to curb appeal. But straying too far from "classic" will likely not appeal to many folks beyond the individual owner. Naturally, a 5-speed is a plus. Both of my classics are 5-speeds with red APC boxes.
As for mileage, while less knowledgeable folks may shun classic 900s with 6-figure ODOs, look at the hoopla that Peter Gilbert's SPG created as the "Million Mile SAAB" in 2006. And numerous folks came in 2nd, 3rd, 50th, etc. Both of my 900Ts are well past 150K and going strong (BTW, the 1987 red vert is for sale).
Assigning a value is always tough and here's a thought as to why. SAABs have always been very good values compared to other Euro sportscars, while still costing more (new) than American cars of similar stature. Valuing a Classic 900 today, 15 years after the model ended, really comes down to the individual car and owner, as well as the state of the market (which has been tough lately). Actually, I think GM buying SAAB has helped the value of the Scania cars (pre-GM).
I think the SAABNET Classifieds represent a fairly good cross-section of cars, owners and prices based on familiarity and predisposed appeal. And, while some of the high $$ offerings have made me stop and scratch my head, most of the cars listed appear fairly priced, if you know what you're looking at and for.
Just one SAABers opinion.
