You know I am going thru something similar with my 89S. I have a fleet of classic 900s. These are all "old" cars, the newest is 15 years old and they all have high miles. I love these cars but there is a limit to what I can put up with.
I think the worst is that I was fixing my wife's car (93S) (which broke down twice in a period of two weeks) so she was driving the 89S and it left her stranded in traffic, during rush hour, with my daughter in the car.
Money wise I am still far ahead driving old Saabs. The amount of time I spend working on the Saabs is an issue but not a critical issue. The reliability thing is a big deal for me. But in the end I wonder how much time, money and agrevation I should put up with for a car that is old, worn, rusting and probablly exceeded its design limits.
I love these cars (I have a fleet) and have been driving them for a long time but its like a girl friend (or boy friend) that is fun to be with, is great in bed but occastionaly has manic phases where she throws dishes at you. You put up with girl friend and cars that frustrate you when you are young but at some point you just say "uncle". I'll fix my 89 I may even swap a transmission into my 84 but I can see that at some point I will have had enough.
