Those who know me, and my general lack of success in life so far, might suggest alternatives to that description.
Yeah, I guess you could have other problems but I can't think what. Lots of details fit what I suggested and it is actually pretty common.
My suggestion is start off by freeing up the sticky igniton lock cylinder. It's entirely mechanical, and the hole out the back runs down into a big void under the shifter mechanism, so any liquid that drips out there can't hurt anything. It links to the electric switch via a gear segment; the lock cylinder sits lower than the electric switch, which is well forward and above it and is inverted so contacts in it are up at top of things. So any liquid put into the lock cylinder can't possibly get into the electrics.
Water is suggested as it's the only thing that dissolves sugar; rubbing alcohol is part water and will work well by itself or to rinse the water out if you follow a little water with it. Should only need a teaspoon or two if that, in total liquid. Work key thoroughly thru its paces while the liquid is in there, to get all gunk into solution. When done cleaning blow air thru using a piece of rubber hose. Then follow up with some kind of lube maybe, lock-ease or WD-40.
Starter is no fun as you have to remove clutch cover, or at least partially disconnect it on left side, to pry it out of way to get at the two main bolts.
And there's an annoying strut, and a bracket that seems unnecessary, to deal with. Plus twisting and turning the thing to find a path out for it under the intake manifold.
But you're standing up and just bending over a little, lots better than on some cars where you're down under everything.
Is there a Saab indy garage near you who might have a used starter to sell you cheap? Next best source to a junkyard if the price is well less than a rebuilt.
