My best mileage (1990 900T vert) with the AT was 23 mpg on a all highway trip from DC to NJ (pegged the cruise control on 65 mph).
Best mileage after the 5 speed conversion was 36.8 on a trip DC to Chincoteage, VA (on the eastern shore), while driving extremely conservatively late at night with the cruise control pegged on 55. 5th gear overdrive in manual is awesome. Around town (suburban DC area), I routinely get 25-27 mpg. You can typically drive in 5th at speeds of 40 mph and greater on flat terrrain, and pretty much stay in 4th as traffic allows (except on highway or true residential areas. Gearing of the 5 speed is magnificent.
I'd also differ with the statement that the AT is faster off the line (that is not my experience, having driven both. But, we've had that discussion/argument before (re: losing boot during gear changes for manual vs. AT). Bottom line, I'd never go back to the AT.
