first do not allow your car to overheat, that too often leads to a head gasket.
run your heater to see if you can get the temperature down.
If you know where the upper radiator hose is, CAREFULLY touch it very briefly on the (it's a two piece unit with that "T" fitting in the middle to support the temp sender with two spade connectors to wires) section closer to the radiator. If you car is getting HOT and the upper hose is not also HOT chances are that the thermostat has failed. They always fail closed (which is the pitts!) and don't allow the water (well it does a little bit) out of the block and to the radiator for cooling...
If the temperature rises FAST from starting the car, and you can keep influence it cooler by running your heater on full, and you have coolant in the system, chances are that the thermostat has failed. This is a DIY replacement, lots of resources on how to do it.
Again, DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CAR to overheat.... Big bucks down the road.
"Experience varies directly with equipment runined.... and I've ruined alot of stuff - or at least seen the results of others doing it..."
