Dunno about 8v cars, but AFAIK all 16v cars have different cables for manual vs. auto. Manual cars have a large cam on the throttle, and the cable is crimped on. Auto cars have no cam, and the cable is hooked on with a vaguely S-shaped hook. You can use an auto throttle on a manual car, but not the other way around; the manual throttle doesn't have a provision for the kickdown. Most people don't swap this stuff, since you're usually swapping just the transmission and not an entire engine. Usually you end up using your auto throttle on your manual transmission... Doesn't affect anything other than throttle response, since you don't have the cam.
