70 weight gear oil???? Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Thu, 4 Sep 2008 07:15:32 In Reply to: Usual snake oil comparisons, whitesaab, Thu, 4 Sep 2008 05:42:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Read the manuals. That was the Factory Fill for 99 & C900 manual transmissions. Ok, maybe it was 75W, but the point is the factory fill was NOT 10W30 or 10W40 motor oil.
Fact is, you could never get the 70/75W here in the states, except through a Saab dealer, or your brother-in-law who traveled to Sweden and brought you back 3 liters worth. So Saab recommended the 10W30 or 10W40 for topping up.
The one thing you don't want to EVER put in the box is synthetic *motor* oil. Synthetic *gear* oil or manual transmission lube is fine (Redline, et. al.), but not synthetic motor oil.
If topping it up with 10W30 or 10W40 motor oil, use a quality mineral-based oil.
