I understand. This is the way I've done it. pull it out of the car, turn it over, drain it. leave it for an hour or so. If you have ever run a new pre pump or a new internal pump, you will note the smooth and quiet nature of those pumps. yes the pumps are made to push fluid and not air. However, that is not the part that goes bad, it is the electric motor and or bearings in it, not the impeller that is pushing the fluid. I've done it many times, originally out of curiosity, to prove to myself that I was replacing the correct faulty component.
Do it outside, drain the pump upside down and let it sit for an hour, you will be fine.
It works.
