1) the 2.3 head is the SAME as the 2.1 head, except for the cams. Same port size, same valve size, same casting part #. All you're getting is the improved flow (but only if you also install the 2.1 inlet...)
2) as for the electrics, the gut simple thing to do first is to remove LH 2.2 if you have it, and replace with LH 2.4. That's a mostly simple junkyard swap. You will, however, need to do a few items, depending on how old your 2.2 car is. When I did my 1986 CV, I had to iron out a few items. Number one is the speedometer. The LH 2.4 gets a speed signal from the speedo. I don't know exactly how important that is, but I swapped in a 1988- speedo to get the right electrical takeoff (this also means changes to the cruise control...)
LH 2.4 is MUCH more stable than the 2.2 ever was, or will be.
Oh - you'll also need he EVAP canister (charcoal canister) from a late car, as LH 2.4 controls the purge valve on it.
3) I installed DI/APC on the 900 CV. This was a bit more complex, as I had to interface the LH with the DI (just making connections, really), install a new APC valve (the 1990- 9000 style), and a manifold pressure sensor. Fortunately, Saab makes this relatively simple. What you need is a 1990 9000 in the junkyard (A 91 or 92 will do, but there are differences in the DI/APC systems). You need access to the DI/APC box under the driver seat. Remove the box (you'll need that), and also carefully remove the harness for the DI/APC. This harness goes over to the sill, forward, then up the kick panel, and on into the engine bay. Take anything that connects to the harness.
Note: the very original DI cassettes had long cables permanently attached to them. Most 9000s over time have had those changed out for the later models with the connector on the cassette body. There is a special harness that connects to the DI cassette with the one connector, and goes to the two 4-pin connectors the DI/APC harness uses. Get that if its in the car.
The last big item is installing the crankshaft position sensor. For that, you need two junkyard cars: One must be a Mid-1988 or later 900 NON turbo 16v, and the other the 9000 with DI/APC that you got the harness, etc,. from. From the 900 you need the crankshaft pulley (AKA Harmonic Balancer), the oil pump cover, and the crankshaft position sensor mounted to same (If your 900 turbo is late enough, it already has the same cover, so all you need is the pulley and sensor - but check first). From the 9000, you need the shutter wheel that is behind the main pulley. This is held to the pulley with three screws. You must swap the shutter wheel from the 9000 pulley (three slots) onto the 900 pulley you got from the other car (turbo pulleys won't work, because they are not set up for the shutter wheel).
Actually, there is one more thing you need from the donor 9000: the aluminum blank-off plug for the distributor hole...
When all was said and done, and I tested everything, the car started up first try. I can't recall EVER having an easier to start car than the 1986 turbo CV with the DI/APC and LH 2.4.
I saw the car at the SOC las month,. The current owner says it just keeps on running. He had it dynoed, and with the APC valve disconnected (there's a problem with it), the car dynoed at 195 HP, right where it should be with a red box DI/APC.
Note: this car has a STOCK 2.0 liter head, and the STOCK turbo, and STOCK injectors, albeit with a 2.8 bar FPR.
As for Trionic...
I suppose it is possible to put Trionic on a C900. That would involve considerably more work than I did with DI/APC. The Trionic controls almost everything under the hood, including radiator fans, etc. This would NOT be a simple swap, but if you had time on your hands, a stack of manuals,. and the ambition, it's not impossible. Your biggest issue would be finding a 2.0 liter Trionic controller... (unless you went and used an NG900 T-5 system...)
