5 spd donor for conversion: from 85T to 93NA? Posted by Arabiflora [Email] (#1129) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Arabiflora) on Tue, 16 Sep 2008 23:13:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The autotrans went out on my '93 Arkansaab 900. I scouted my favorite local boneyard and found an 85T with about 125k mi on the clock and no evident damage to the clutch or transmission. Better yet, I found a parts receipt in the dash compartment that had enough info to allow email correspondance with the PO. He recalled that the car was his daughter's, and had suffered a rear-end collison in 2001 that rendered it undrivable, or at least unsafe for operation.
The yard owner and his crew know nothing about Saabs, excepting a bad experience some years past in which they were unable to successfully separate a Saab tranny from the motor and they weren't interested in trying that one again.
I proposed the following: that if they removed the motor and tranny as a unit, I would take custody and responsibility for scavanging the tranny parts I want, and would return the motor to them when I was done. The yard owner thinks $250 would be a reasonable price for the transaction.
Understanding that a (motor)/tranny purchase, only, does not provide nearly all the accessory parts needed to do the conversion, does this sound like the good deal that I think it is?
FWIW, the only 'diagnostics' I performed in my short surveying visit were to move the shifter through the motions, and it seemed pretty smooth.
Hints, tips, and warning flags to beware of will be greatly appreciated.
