It's been some years since I was last in NJ, but I know lots of people who have run afoul of the DMV there. There were some fishy aspects to the privatization of that organization, including non-performance, faulty software, test equipment that wouldn't work in the winter, suspicious players, and nepotism of some sort.

What really got me was the fact that under certain circumstances The State can take your car away from you. The way I understand it if your car fails inspection you're required to spend whatever it takes to fix it - up to a certain dollar amount. If, after spending that dollar amount, your car can't pass inspection they give you a special sticker which gives you an exemption for a specified amount of time (the registration period, I believe). Upon the expiration of that exemption the car is condemned, cannot be re-registered, and must be taken off the road. Next stop, the crusher. How you gonna sell a car nobody's allowed to drive?

I was born & raised on the Jersey Shore and as much as I loved being a kid there I'd never want to live there again.
