This is a recurring thread, I guess we are all guilty of doing this, my son put a 40 oz coke into the center console, mopped it up didn't tell me and thought he was good to go. After the car sat unused for about a week the latent issue of gunk in the switch became an issue.
Two things seemed to be true, whatever you use to clean/loosen the unit it often takes an overnight wait for it to be most effective. And the methodes are varied and all seem to work reasonably well, and include a minor amount of boiled water, various lube/cleaners, and staying away from the ones that will melt/eat plastic including carb cleaner, brake cleaner, and electronics cleaners.
Your comment about WD-40 is interesting, WD stands for "water displacing" and sodas are a combination of water and sweetner, usually a corn sugar component or something similar. I have used WD-40 with success, but you do have to give it some time to work, like overnight?
