Car: 89 900 S

First thing: I've spoken to one of the most highly respected Saab mechanics in Minneapolis (he's a few blocks from my home) and he doesn't think it's the transmission. So given that, I'd like some ideas (educated, please no shots in the dark) as to what it is, and I have a few ideas of my own.

My Saab makes noise while in motion. It I don't know if the noise is from the drive train or is manifested as such in the cab from vibration -- I can feel the vibrations in the pedals.

No matter what the speed, direction, rotation of the wheels I get the noise.

It's not a clicking and it doesn't occur more in turn than forward (or vice versa) so I highly doubt I have a c/v going bad. It doesn't stop in turn so I doubt it's a ball bearing; It also doesn't pop out of gear, slip in gear or disappear when I accelerate so I do not believe it is a warped rotor. Neither does it stop when the brake is applied.

So I think it could be one of these # things:

1) A bad/failing transaxle. When I had the c/v boot replaced on the drivers side last fall I did not replace the axle - I didn't have that much money at the time
2) A bad drive shaft
3) A bad rear axle.
4) A bent/damaged wheel

Other notes:
290+
Standard transmission
None of the tires show excessive wear or any bulging, all tires are filled to recommended PSI.
Power steering is fine, the transmission oil seems to be near full but I haven't had the time nor flexibility (I hurt my back about a month ago) to get under the car and drain the fluid and refill.

So I'm at a loss. With him not believing it's the transmission (based on the information I gave him Saturday over the phone) there's a great weight off my shoulder/pocketbook as what I think it could be is far less expensive in parts and labour than removing, opening the transmission, replacing the pinion (my initial thought as to the culprit) and reinstalling.

Thanks in advance.
