help! My 86 spg is boiling batteries!-

Hi guys.
I drove my 86 spg without a battery heatshield in place for 6 months. (I know) finally found a spare shield, dropped it in, everything was ok for another six months.
Yesterday, the battery swelled up like a ballon and failed catastrophically. I thought well, that may have been the cumulative effect of heat from running sans shield, and now that I have one, I can put in a fresh battery and be fine.
Not the case! My new battery seems to be immediatly affected- what is going on? Is my heatshield compromised? Why is the heat now suddenly cooking the battery? Is the shield actually transferring heat, as it is in contact with both the battery and the manifold? I am worried my drive home from work tossy is going to cost me $80...
Anyone who can help, please advise!
