Really worn spark plugs

I've been getting symptoms of a bad O2 sensor based on insights from this forum. I've been having weird mild overheating issues along with small variations in idle. Not that the engine temp would get into the red, it would just get hotter faster if I changed throttle a lot. Plus I haven't changed the O2 sensor in at least 80K miles.
I swapped out the O2 sensor, plugs, distro rotor/cap. Car runs much better - small increase in power (no lugging at low rpm) and isn't building up heat oddly. I noticed the center electrodes on all the plugs were really thin - like a pin. Normally they are more like a thick wire. I thought at first I had put platinum plugs in but they were normal NGKs. It had been so long since I'd last changed the plugs the gaps were way off and most of the center electrodes had burned away. I'm not sure how any kind of spark was actually getting across the gap but the car ran somehow.
I haven't had time to see if mpg goes up or down but driveability definitely went up.
