A freeze plug is a concave disk that is pushed into a hole on the engine block. They are about 7/8" diameter. It is supposed to pop out if the coolent freezes, thereby protecting your block from cracking. It is not screwed in, it's just held in by tension. If one has failed, you'll know it by looking at it. You will have coolant trails driping from it down the side of the block. If you have a failed one, you just hammer a screwdriver through it and pry it out. I've seated new ones by placing a long socket in the concave area and hitting it with a dead-blow hammer. Go slow, you want to make sure that it stays straight as it goes in.
You can hold a small mirror under your exhaust manifold while leaning over the P/S fender and look at the block up underneath.
