Different fenders... The floorpan length is the same between the hatches and the sedans (the Convertible is built on a sedan). What changes between them is the rear fenders. On the hatch, the rear fenders taper in towards the center. On the sedans, the rear fenders stay straight, or at least don't taper nearly as much.
You can't see it so much on the 1987 & up cars, because the bumper extension covers this area, but on the 81-86 cars, you can plainly see the fact that the rear fenders on the sedan bodies are relieved (indented, scalloped, gouged, cut-out, whatever) for the non-integrated rear bumper which was the same part for both sedan and hatch. Otherwise, the bumper would not fit.
This makes it very hard to adapt the rear bumper extensions of the -1986 SPG/Aero panels to a 1986 Convertible. But, as previously pointed out, there ARE SPG/Aero rear bumper extensions that fit properly for the 1987 and up CVs. These came on the 1988 Springtime in Sweden and the 1991 SE.
