here's what I do. Get yourself some ramps and some brake cleaner. Degrease the engine first with Simple Green and a hose. Get it up on the ramps and start wiping stuff down. Because you are looking at the firewall I'd check these things first:

1) Suction/return hose on the power steering pump. This hose gets hard where it clamps to the pump and the clamp gets rusty. You'll need a new hose and clamp.

2) Shift shaft seal. This can be done in the car, but it's about the only thing that I left to a shop to do on my recent restoration project.

3) Passenger side axle. The seal that is pressed into the casting that bolts to the transmission is often hard as rock on the Turbo cars from exhaust heat. This isn't too bad of a fix if you've had your axle and/or inner driver off before.

4) Valve cover gasket. Feel along the bottom of the valve cover. If there's oil it can work its way back to the firewall area as the car is driving

5) Oil pump seal and o-ring. Sounds like this has already been done but it's easy to see from underneath when the car is on ramps

6) Transmission rear cover. Make sure you use the rubber coated steel gasket because it seals well. Perhaps someone has taken the rear cover off a few times to change the oil (later cars didn't have a drain plug) and it no longer seals.

I probably had my car up on the ramps 5 times to chase these things down. I addressed one issue at a time and when I thought I had everything sealed up tight, then I found out that the inner driver flange (#3 above) was my last leak. This car had only 90k on it, so these seals can harden with time, and not just mileage.
