wouldn't it be easier to just taste it? ;)
all five fluids have a distinct feel, taste and smell- coolant and brake not recommended to tast but feel and smell ok -
engine oil will appear black or dark brown and smell carbony and smell a bit gassy,
power steering - clear and viscuous with no distinct odour,
transmission a sulphur smell if you are using real manual transmission fluid, clear if you are using motor oil, etc etc
at least this way you can determine which fluid it is not.
I do agree that washing will help immensely but a degreaser in a can with a hose will do the same -
if leak is below the exhaust manifold side assume mating areas in the engine assembly, or distributor
if on drivers side assume main seal (at front) - it tends to leak down past the drain bolt - the lowest point on the engine
if at the rear of engine it could be oil filler, power steering leak or oil pump gasket - less likely is leaky clutch line.
