You don't remove anywhere near all the fluid when you drain an AT.
Even if you drop both pans I still don't think you get 50% out.
I remember calculating this a while ago, but I think you need to do it 6x (please correct if wrong) to get about 95% of the fluid changed.
You need to fun the engine w/ trans in Neutral, drive and reverse for 30 seconds to cycle the fluid through the whole transmission.
I have a rebuilt 3spd in the garage that I never got back in the car. If you want to tackle a rebuild I can loan you the factory manuals. Parts are hard to find, but relatively inexpensive when you find a vendor. $300-400 w/ all the clutch packs, converter, bands and etc. My 1-2 clutch packs were toast.
Most people don't do proper maint on the AT. The fluid should be changed every 15k miles. I'd do it every 5k when i changed my Mobile 1.
You can search the board for a 5spd conversion - many have done it.
You should drop both pans, do the gaskets and a filter before you call it dead!
Good luck - Carl
