Can't pull clutch input shaft Posted by Arabiflora [Email] ![]() ![]() |
'88 900S, NA, 376k mi. Slave cylinder failed ~1,000 mi ago, figured I would redo all clutch parts (PP, disk, slave, etc). Release (throw-out) bearing seems to be bad now-- clutch drags and makes a loud screech when pedal is depressed, especially during transition from engaged to disengaged.
I finally dug into it today-- removed the shroud and started the car, had a friend work the clutch and engage transmission. I can see through teeth of clutch that the throwout bearing will seize intermittently and it's at those times that the clutch makes noise.
So here's the problem: I CAN'T disengage the input shaft in order to pull the clutch and get at the bearing. I tried to use the same prybar/washered bolt that was useful when I replaced the clutch earlier-- no go, the prybar buckled at the bolt. I tried a picklefork behind the washer and breaker bar for leverage-- broke the shaft off the picklefork.
What could be going on? One possibility (perhaps?) is that the release bearing has seized on the input shaft; another is that the shaft splines are buggered on the flywheel side. Either way, it seems necessary to pull the input shaft to get at the backside.
I'm thinking of buying a bearing puller but would welcome alternative suggestions/fixes.
Thanks in advance, Scott
