Alternator died (?) while driving and car overheated.

I was driving on the expressway in my 93 900S when I noticed my car was running hot. I kept an eye on it for a mile or so while it would go down to about 3/4 and shoot back up to 7/8 on the temp gauge. I tried turning on my heater but it was blowing cold air. As I pulled off the expressway, I noticed a clinking sound coming from the driver's side accompanied with the loss of power steering. I continued exiting and began to find a spot to pull into to check out the situation when the car overheated. Any ideas of what this is? An hour or so later, after the temp went down, I went back and started it back up and popped the hood to inspect the noise and it was indeed coming from the alternator area. I assume it would be a bad alternator? Does this generally affect the switching of the fans?
My real concern here is with the overheating. I'm pretty sure it's stock thermostat, thermoswitch, etc. My car has never run hot, not even while towing a trailer through some pretty steep conditions. I've read that the 93 900s are notorious for blown head gaskets. Could one overheat do this car in?
