It sounds to me almost certain that you've got a blown HG. The radiator hose likely blew due to excessive pressure in the coolant system caused by venting of combustion gasses through the HG breach. Static compression test is rarely informative re: HG, but you've got all the symptoms.
In re: Boston Saab mechs, my only rec is from service records that were passed along when I bought my '88 900S NA: Mecca Motors in Allston. The service slip I'm looking at is dated 10/30/97 and posts mileage at 219k mi, I bought the car in ~2002 and at 377k mi it's still going strong, so maybe they know what they're doing.
FWIW, the cost to R&R a Saab 900 HG is mostly for labor, the parts themselves (HG, valve cover gasket, valve stem seals, and incidentals) are usually only a minor portion of overall cost. If you have the tools (and it doesn't take many), the time, and the motivation, use the board here and give it a DIY go.
Good luck,
Scott
