When I did ours a few years back, I'm pretty sure it just needed some light buffing with superfine emery paper and a swab of isopropyl alcohol...
On the plus side, the design is great to disassemble, and the large copper contacts are easy to clean and wear well. On the negative side, the unplated copper will corrode, especially if foreign material gets into the switch (a given with it's location and orientation). A little plating might have solved all of this!
Overall, it's a part that should practically last forever... just needs a little too regular maintenance... I'll take that over unavailable expensive replacement parts any day... gotta love these cars!
James...
