That harmless clunk when reversing may not be harmless

My car (an '88 SPG) developed the classic clunk sound when reversing about a year ago. After researching the problem here and elsewhere on the internet I decided to let it be, confident that it was either 'caliper play' or minute slop in the wheel bearing. WAS I WRONG!!!
A couple of weeks ago, I was tooling along at 60MPH on a fairly bumpy rural road when there was an almighty clunk followed by the car tracking violently to the right. It took a lot of effort to keep the car on the tarmac but eventually I stopped without crashing. It turned out that the LH lower control arm had broken.
Last week-end the lower control arm was replaced and the car is back on the road - minus the clunk. The clunk has totally disappeared.
So let it be known that the reversing clunk can also be caused by the fatigue fracture of a sickly lower control arm. I guess that there was sufficient separation and deformation of the crack for its edges to catch when stressed by the forces involved in reversing the car.
