Junkie,
I'd suggest this: Put the car in first or second, raise the hood and have a friend place a finger on the shaft forward of the rubber coupling right near the transaxle. Now you get in the car and wiggle the shift lever within the realm of the slop about which you're concerned. If your friend feels the shaft moving then there is a problem inside the gearbox. If the shaft he is feeling doesn't move as you wiggle the shift lever then the slop is originating in the shift linkage. It's much more likely to be in the linkage than inside the gearbox but isolating it is the first step. Be aware that a very small amount of movement is normal but with 2" of shift lever play the person whose finger is on the shaft should be feeling for significant motion, not just a little. Having the coupling loose or way out of adjustment might cause such slop. Good luck
