Clicking, creaking, sounds from steering column

Hi,
Last year I replaced the lower U joint in the steering column of my 90 SPG--the old part was very rusty and had caused my steering effort to be hard and then suddenly easy. Once replaced have had no problems--until now. Now I have a clicking, creaking, sound that seems to come from the top part of the steering column. From some comments, it would seem that the lower U joint needs to be lubbed again as good insurance--but is there another joint higher up in the column that could be causing the clicking sound I am experiencing (didn't have that last year)? If so, where is it, and how hard is it to replace it--I am pretty handy and have Saab shop manuals. Right now, I am finding that the steering wheel is either totally hard to turn (like it "caught" on something) or totally easy to turn--it doesn't matter if I am going straight or making hard turns. It also doesn't depend on outside temperature. Horn and turn signals both work fine, too.
Any help much appreciated!
