Agreed - $1000 is very pricey! It's probably four hours of labor, maybe five, and somewhere in the neighborhood of $400 in parts assuming you need to replace the master, hose, and slave. That's close to a grand if professionally done, but $400 if doing it yourself. If you're having it professionally done, I would strongly urge you to throw another $200 on the pile and replace the clutch while you're there. No point having to take it all apart again later!
Buying the '92 for another $1800 nets you a newer car, but you have zero guarantees it won't suffer the same problem on the drive home. Unless your car has other issues the '92 addresses, I'd stick with the devil you know instead of buying into somewhere else's problems. Plus, losing a turbo? That'd be a deal breaker for me...
