If you love the 86 and if it has no rust: keep it. You should find someone to do the repair for a little less $. I bought a nice 1992 for my son. At first I was very pleased: high mileage but cheap with NO RUST... however upon state inspection, we discovered the dreaded rust spot on the exhaust side at the anchoring point of the lower control arm... we had a welder do a very nice repair job (For as much as I had paid for the car though...$500!) I would not keep the 86 for parts, I find that keeping a car idle has its problems, it rusts if kept outside, and if you are lucky enough to have room in a dry place like a barn, the car is still exposed to having unwanted critters making their home in the seats etc... I think the early/mid-eighties cars were great, I had an 84 4-door that was bulletproof and went to 300,000 miles. Aside from the brakes I loved that car. It seems to me your decision should be based on the RUST situation on the 86. Check carefully the control arm area, catalytic converter area, (Heat shield???) floor and wheel wells. Good luck!
