Its pretty exciting having a 900 coming up fast behind you at dusk with both headlights and fog lights on. The front ends of classic 900s and 9000's are very elegant and very aggressive, especially at dusk with the fog lights on.
It was Friday evening. I was traveling through the catskills, northwest on rt. 28, on my way from NYC to Bovina, NY. Driving through Boiceville, NY around 7:30pm, I noticed the SAAB leaving the Boiceville market parking lot. Light grey exterior, SPG wheels and ground effects...it was unmistakable for the ultra rare, and one of my favorite SAABs ever, the '91 SE. They pulled onto 28 about 5 cars behind me. I watched with excitement as they shortened the gap between us by 1-2 cars each dotted yellow. After each curve, there'd be a slight pause and then those lights would dart out across lanes and then back again. It took them about 3 seconds to pass each car. I was impressed. Had this car been modified? The power on my '85 turbo was impressive above 4000rpm, but not like this. I was cruising along behind three other cars at a modest 60-63 mph in my black stage 3 '92 9000 turbo with Carlsson body kit and bridge spoiler. My car's pushing what feels like 260hp. Much faster than an Aero or Viggen. When I saw those headlights just a car-length behind me, and the gleam off that chrome grille, I new it was only a split-second before they'd dart around me and disappear into the night. I glanced back to the road and then back to the rear view. Nothing there. Then, to the left, a dark flash of grey, followed by the symphony of a 16 valve turbo engine at 5000rpm! The car raced past me and darted back into the right lane. The SAAB was only in front of me for a second, before they passed the car in front of them and then the other. I flicked it into 4th gear and revved the engine once, twice. The loud suction through the JT cold air intake and the TISHH TISHH from the Forge BOV only fueled my excitement. I threw on the turn signal. I was about to nail the throttle when I looked to the right and saw my sleeping girlfriend. I looked to the backseat and saw our dog, also asleep. I had to smile. Looking back to the road, the convertible's taillights were almost gone. I flicked the turn signal off.
