Herman, I had this problem on a '90 (woops '91) auto. I just posted to Arcy who's having possibly related trouble.
Frank Myers is probably right. The switch, a kind of arch-shaped black plastic contraption about 1/4" thick by say a third of a circle, is bolted to the side of the shifter housing. It can be adjusted; as I recall there's a peg that needs to be lined up with a scribe mark. An old post by me tells it exactly, and could show up with a search.
But I bet your problem isn't just location of the switch, but condition of its contacts.
The interior of that switch has a bunch of copper contacts, and a sliding section that also has contacts on it. Mine was filthy inside and the contact surfaces were badly worn and pitted.
I scraped things all clean with a screwdriver, maybe also did something (old post will show) to improve contact on sliding part, then lubed it with silicone plumber's grease, popped side cover back on, and aligned it and tightened it down.
I couldn't find any kind of connector to unplug the switch, the wires may reach a connector eventually but instead I just left that side in the car and did some of my work inside the car, some on the bench, then reassembled it in situ.
A Saab indy with 900 experience has probably dealt with this and could fix it for you, no telling the charge.
