Both sides were out. I researched the board to troubleshoot, After removing the speaker, I pulled both light fittings ("bulb holders) out to inspect the bulbs. Bulbs seemed okay....reinstalled both and the right side worked! Left side was still not functioning.
Well upon further inspection (from looking through the windshield at the area where the light fitting fits into the socket), I noticed that I had damaged a small area of the blue plastic "wiring film sheet" that the thin copper circuitry is imbedded in. In doing so, I destroyed the connection area of that film that the lighting fitting is supposed to make with it. Apparently the film was so old and brittle and the bulb holder had sort of fused to the blue plastic sheet, so when I attempted removal it destroyed the plastic sheet, and the connective copper line with it.
I was thinking of rigging a "fix" by soldering a tiny piece of copper wire to each side of the bulb holder, and then soldering the tiny wires to the remaining respective flat copper ends of the blue plastic sheet to complete the connection and presumably get the left dash light to work.
My wife is a surgeon and has graciously volunteered to do the task with typical Radio shack soldering tools and supplies. She is used to doing delicate tasks and can perform "backwards tasks" using a mirror better than I can. I could do it myself by removing the windshield, but I do not want to open that can of worms. I know... I am a most fortunate Saab owner to have such a wonderful wife!
I have some concerns about melting the blue plastic, but am willing to take that risk. I could do with just one dash light operational myself, but I am planning to sell the car, an Imola Red, low mileage gem of a sedan, but having both lights operational is a must to get top dollar...or I could wait another ten years when the Classic 900S's are even more rare...LOL.
Any comments on my plan (including recommended wire guages) are welcome. If you have any alternative ideas, they are welcome as well.
Thanks!
