Small world (I'm another James R. with a red 1993 900S sedan)...
I haven't actually had any dash bulbs burn out, so I've never been in there to look at the flex pcb, but generally flex is not a problem to solder to (I've done lots of it). If you are concerned, my advice would be to find someone who will lend you their temperature controlled soldering station + a small tip - set it at a temp just low enough to melt the solder and you should be ok. If you use a fairly thin gauge wire (say 22AWG) and pretin both ends leaving a tiny extra blob of solder, you can then make the connections with minimal heat + fewer arms to hold things. That said, I can't imagine soldering this stuff reaching through the (tiny) speaker hole. I'd want to get good access to the flex, especially, if it's going brittle, to inspect for cracks in the traces.
It seems this is a common issue + some people have hardwired an assembly with LEDs to deal with it. I suspect that is what I'll do when the time comes. If you search "dash LED" on this board, you'll see what I mean...
cheers,
James...
