generally yes, but several things....
First, on your current engine is it just the head gasket or something in the lower end?
the 92 is a 2.1, the 89 is usually a 2.0.
is the autobox on the 89 known to be good?
is the autobox on your 92 known to be good?
If your 92 autobox is known to be good, you were driving it, right? I'd consider putting it on the other engine. A gasket, some sealer, and a bunch of bolts.
The intake manifold, and the head, is different on the 2.1 (your 92) than on the 2.0 (the 89). the intake manifold from the 92 (in the car) will not port match the 89, which is detrimental. you would need to use the 89 intake manifold.
in order for the engine 89 to work properly in the 92 you should move all of the 92 electrical stuff to the 89, the AIC, the AMM, and perhaps the throttle body as well. The 2.0 is a great motor, but you will need to make sure the bits on the engine are the same as on the 92 to work with the other "black boxes" in the car.
Curious again as to how bad the 92 engine is/got?
