After removing the old seal, I used 220 grit wet or dry sand paper to polish the shift rod. Then used brake clean and then took black electrical tape running parallel with the rod--like a banana peal to cover the holes in the shaft and light nicks where I punched the outer seal flange through the slots in the mail copper threaded end used on a half inch copper pipe. Then packed the new seal with white lithium grease, greased the taped shift rod and easily slid the seal to the transmission. Then, I used a 5/8th long socket to lightly tap the seal into the back of the transmission. This was a little tricky to keep the seal square as the attachment flange from the shift lever coming from the cab was a little in the way. The tape came off completely after I had the seal slid up to the face of the transmission. I did not like the way teflon tape or scotch tape overlapped and formed ridges so settled for the black tape in a banana peal style. There's no way I could have removed that seal with a small screwdriver. Was pleased to see the seal move into the transmission slightly as I hammered and screwed in the pipe nipple. Because I had dented in the outer seal flange first I had to grind and taper the threaded nipple so it would slip under the dented seal outer flange. I used some freeze out liquid wrench too but any liquid wrench product might have worked as well just prior to working to screw in the copper pipe nipple. I could have purchased a drill bit to ream out the pipe nipple but at $28 I decided against this purchase for a one time use.
