E-Codes are the headlamps supplied on the car in Europe (hence the "E"). They use the much better H4 bulb, and considerably improved reflectors and lenses over the SAE lamps of the day.
E-Codes spread a broad, even swath of light across the road with practically no "hotspots". They have a sharp cutoff on dipped beam ("low" beam in the US), above which, they don't glare into the eyes of oncoming traffic.
There is really no substitute if you drive where it is truly dark at night. Once you have them, you'll never want to go back to SAE lamps, or anything with a 900? bulb in it...
