new wheel bearing has play?

i'm replacing my drivers side cv and wheel bearing. i took the hub to a shop to have the old bearing pressed out and the new one pressed in and as i was filing down the damaged splines (the shop guy must have used the wrong sized press tool) i noticed there was alot of movement from the new bearing. if i push it together by hand i don't see any play but a light pull apart and there is about 3/16" in out play and about the same for side to side play.
is this normal or did the shop mess up the bearing? i don't want to put it back together and ruin the new axle.
thanks for any info
