1987 Saab 900 -- will it break my heart? Posted by Morgan [Email] (#1972) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Morgan) on Tue, 5 May 2009 08:55:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi all,
I'm in a position to buy my first car. I've never been what you would call a 'car guy', but after doing some research, I've fallen head over heels for the classic Saab 900s.
I have an opportunity to pick up a 1987 900 for $1000 (Canadian). It's not without it's problems, though, I'm hoping I could get some veteran advice before I make a decision.
The good:
-Driven regularly
-Body is in good shape overall
-New clutch
-New front Shocks
-5-speed
The bad:
-290,000kn (180,000 miles)
-non-turbo
-small hole in floor
-Needs new routers and pads
-Back wheel wells rusted out
-Only one stereo speaker works
-Driver's door opens 'funny' from the outside
-Cracks in the dash
-Ceiling cloth hanging down a bit
-Needs to warm up a bit before going; a bit 'funny' right off the bat.
-One headlight wiper broken
-One reverse light burnt out
I'm not mechanically inclined, so anything beyond changing a lightbulb would be done by a mechanic. The bright side is that the car is well below my budget, so I could conceivably put 2-3k into fixing it up a bit.
So my question to you, Saab gurus, is "Would you buy it?" Are there any red flags that jump out at you? Will this car break my heart?
Thanks for indulging a greenhorn :-)
