So... you are now comparing a 16 year old car to an 8 year old car?? So supposed our friend had to pay a mechanic to change a light bulb on a Honda Civic? Would it be much cheaper? It is all relative for there are people who get rid of their Japanese manufactured cars after three years to avoid problems.

I use the 900 as a daily driver, and my wrench is NOT out regularly. That is to imply that the 900 has a higher maintenance. Where I think the problem comes in ANY old car is that a person fixes things as the break; hence a reactive approach. Again, as I mentioned earlier, if you take apart a 900, rebuild or replace everything at once..; then the car is just as reliable as when it was new. But the average person does not does not do that(including myself because I like mechanics and like working on cars) and things break at odd times..one after the next; and the person is now under the impression that the car is a money pit. But investigate the difference between 25,000 for a new car, or 10,000 for a pre-own car, and 2500- 5,000 for a classic Saab 900. So if that same person at the start, would invest another 2,500 to renew most components( ball joints, cv, tie rod, shocks, alternator, fuel pump, water pump, crankshaft pulley, oil pump, radiaator, hoses, etc; then that person would have one hell of a reliable Saab 900 and can pack his wrenches away; and travel across country.

This is off the topic, yet at the end, buying a new car vs an old car is the same. It is whether one wants so pay the monthly payments on a new car, or pay it to a mechanic on an old car. With all the recently manufactured and new cars out..despite some may be faster, more comfortable, something still galvanises me to the classic Saab 900. Perhaps, the same goes for our friend above.
